The new project will be presented at the European Hydrogen Week 2023

The European Hydrogen Week 2023, the largest annual event dedicated to the carrier in Europe and co-organized by the EU Executive, kicks off today. The appointment will be the stage of choice for the launch of the new generation of hydrogen fuel cells signed by Honda. The Japanese multinational has announced in these hours that it will present at the Brussels Expo the new fuel cell system developed together with GM. A compact yet powerful system, designed to offer “exceptional durability” and wide versatility. Even beyond the classic boundaries of electric mobility.

After more than 30 years at the forefront of developing hydrogen fuel cells, we believe that demand for this technology will soon reach the critical mass needed for full commercial implementation,” commented Ingo Nyhues, Deputy Director General, of Europe Business Planning & Development, Honda Motor Europe. “The features of our next-generation fuel cell system are ideal for meeting the pressing needs of different industries looking for a rapid transition to zero-emission energy sources. It is a highly versatile unit thanks to its compact size, powerful output, exceptional durability and the ability to provide fast startup times, even in low-temperature environments”.

The first field of application will obviously be electric vehicles. In 2024, in North America and Japan, Honda will present a new hydrogen car on the model of the CR-V launched last year, but equipped with the latest generation system. At the same time, it will continue to develop fuel cell solutions for heavy-duty vehicle applications. Together with Isuzu Motors, the company has already planned some demonstration tests on public roads of a new model of truck to be brought to market in 2027.

Honda will also propose the application of its fuel cell systems in the energy production sector. The first step? The installation on the corporate campus of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in California, of a stationary fuel cell power plant with a capacity of about 500 kW, which reuses the systems previously mounted on the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell. With an eye to Space. The company has signed, in fact, a research and development contract with JAXA, the Japanese space agency, on the study and prototyping of a system that combines water electrolysis and fuel cells, to provide electricity to residential modules and lunar rovers.
